The Running Fence Run: A Run of Freedom
The Running Fence Run takes place on September 12, 2026 in the Sonoma County hills near Bloomfield, California. The event commemorates two anniversaries: the 50th anniversary of the Running Fence art installation from September 10 to 24, 1976, and the historic anniversary of the Battle of Marathon on September 12, 490 BC.
The 1976 Running Fence consisted of a 24.5 mile ribbon of white fabric stretched across the hills of Sonoma and Marin counties for two weeks. That distance is linked in the event concept to the origin of the marathon, recalling the ancient run from Marathon to Athens that inspired the modern race.
Participants can choose from multiple distances that pass through the landscape associated with the 1976 installation. The event location is listed as 6775 Moro Street, Bloomfield, California 94952, United States.
Race packet distribution is scheduled at Sports Basement in Santa Rosa on September 5 and September 11. The event program includes four distance options to accommodate different race preferences. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
