About the Event
The Running Fence Run is a running event that celebrates the 50th anniversary of Christo and Jeanne-Claude's "Running Fence" artwork. The "Running Fence" was a fabric fence that stretched 24.5 miles across Sonoma and Marin Counties in September 1976. The event also marks the 2,516th anniversary of the Battle of Marathon, which took place on September 12, 490 BC.
Historical Connections
The artwork's length of 24.5 miles matches the distance of the legendary run by Pheidippides from Marathon to Athens, which was also the distance of the first Olympic Marathon in 1896. The project was conceived in 1972 and was controversial at the time. The Running Fence - Watson School Historic Park memorializes the artwork.
