Run With the Horses Marathon : course and event information
The Run With the Horses event takes place in Green River, Wyoming, on the third weekend in August and is held in conjunction with the town River Festival. The event offers four race distances:
- Marathon
- Half marathon
- 10K
- 5K
The race starts at Expedition Island at an elevation of about 6,100 feet. The first two miles follow city streets and the paved Greenbelt Trail along the Green River. The course then follows the Wild Horse Loop Tour Road, a county graded dirt road, and climbs 1st Springs Canyon for about two miles. After the canyon runners traverse the top of White Mountain over rolling hills with elevations between about 7,300 and 7,500 feet. The course is an out-and-back route; each race uses a halfway turnaround and returns to Green River.
Aid stations are placed every two miles starting at mile 2 and provide water, Gatorade, and selected snacks at several stations. Port a potties are located at the start, mile 2, around mile 6.5 to 8.6, and at the marathon 13.1 turnaround. A seven hour time limit applies to all race levels. Awards are given to winners in several categories. Full and half marathon entries include a t-shirt and finisher medal; 10K and 5K runners may need to purchase shirts for an additional fee.
Packet pick up is held the evening before the race in front of Expedition Island and a physical waiver must be signed if not completed online. The River Festival includes vendor booths, a Cajun shrimp boil and pasta meal ticketed events, beer gardens, live music, and fireworks.
