Run Wild Races XIV: Wild Camel Run
Run Wild Races takes place at the Metro Richmond Zoo on May 1, 2027. The event supports wild camel conservation; 100% of the event’s net proceeds will go to wild camel conservation. Many entries include same day zoo admission, and some animals may not be on exhibit during the runs but will be available to see after the zoo opens.
Event distances and formats include:
- Mini 1 Mile for children ages 2 to 11
- 5K all terrain run through zoo grounds and perimeter areas
- Wild Ninja approx. 2 miles with obstacle course challenges
- Virtual 5K completed remotely between April 26 and May 2
The Mini 1 Mile is designed for children ages 2 to 11 but allows runners of any age when accompanying a participating child. The course runs largely through zoo pathways with mixed surfaces: gravel, grass, dirt, and pavement. Strollers that handle all terrain are permitted. Mini participants ages 2 and older require a ticket; children 1 and under do not.
The 5K follows mostly dirt, mulch, and grass trails with some gravel and asphalt. The course goes through zoo interior sections and around the perimeter, includes winding turns, rolling and some steep hills, bridges, and views of wildlife. 5K participants ages 5 and older require a ticket; children ages 5 to 10 must be accompanied by a participating parent or chaperone.
The Wild Ninja obstacle course covers roughly 2 miles with up to 42 obstacles modeled on ninja and OCR styles. It is scored by obstacles completed rather than by time. Run Wild Ninja is open to participants age 8 and older; 8 to 14 year olds must compete with an adult or have a full access spectator with them. Contestants who complete all obstacles earn free entry to the next Wild Ninja event.
Virtual 5K participants complete the distance at their chosen place and time between April 26 and May 2. Medals, shirts, and swag are shipped the Monday before the race. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
