Run the River Ultra Challenge and Relay
Run the River Ultra Challenge and Relay is a timed six hour event held at Petal River Park in Petal, MS on November 7, 2026. The primary course is a roughly 2.8-mile loop that alternates between wide meadow lanes and single-track beneath a hardwood canopy. Course features include riverfront views, lagoons, wetlands, palmetto fields, and historic train trestles.
The event offers multiple participation formats and official divisions. Individual ultra runners complete as many loops as possible within six hours. Relay teams of two to four members run one person on course at a time and exchange a baton in the designated exchange zone; only laps finished before the cut-off count. A new, shorter community walk loop provides an accessible option for walkers.
Support and logistics are organized on-site with a tailgate-style setup for teams and supporters. There is no on-course aid station due to the short loop; cold refreshments are available at the finish/loop start. Teams may keep supplies at personal tailgate spots. Overnight camping on-site is permitted without security. Participants should note natural trail hazards such as roots and uneven terrain, and plan gear and hydration accordingly.
Timing is managed by Endurance Timing; individuals wear bibs and teams use a baton system. Final standings are based on completed laps, with ties broken by total time. The event is hosted by the City of Petal Parks & Recreation. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
