The event is held in memory of a loved one who died from leiomyosarcoma and is organized to raise funds for sarcoma-related causes. According to the event information, 100% of funds from registration fees and additional donations will support sarcoma awareness, patient education and assistance, and sarcoma research through organizations such as the Sarcoma Alliance, The Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and the Leiomyosarcoma Support & Direct Research Foundation.
The sunflower is used as the event theme as a symbol of sarcoma awareness. Participants may register as individuals or form teams to compete for top fundraising and top race performance honors. Race timing is provided by Accuchip Timing. All finishers receive a finisher medal; awards are given to the top three men and top three women overall and by five-year age groups.
