The Routeburn Classic
The Routeburn Classic is an adventure trail run along New Zealand’s Routeburn Track within Fiordland National Park, a designated World Heritage Area. The course covers 32 km and climbs to 1127 metres above sea level. The event is staged annually in April and is limited to 400 athletes.
The track passes through varied terrain, including native forest and exposed alpine environments. The route includes sustained uphill sections and technical descents on a rugged, natural trail surface. These features require endurance and attention to footing over changing ground.
The event has been held since 2001. Organisers recorded a change of ownership in 2023 when Ultimate Events took over event management. Support comes from several commercial partners and a local wildlife trust is listed among its supporters.
Information provided by organisers highlights the event format, entry limit, distance and elevation. The Routeburn Classic is presented as an outdoor trail running event that follows an established multi-day hiking track and showcases the track’s natural landscape and terrain variety.
