Rooster Trails at Eight Bells
The Rooster Trails take place on the 400 acre estate of Eight Bells Mountain Inn in Bonnievale, Western Cape. The estate offers six colour coded and signposted walking trails that vary in length and typical walking time. For this outing the group will attempt both the Ridge Lookout and the River Rumble routes. Participants may return to the rest area after completing the first loop if they prefer.
Available trails and approximate lengths:
- Farm Dam - 30 minutes, 1.3 km (blue)
- Hamlet Hobble - 45 minutes, 1.7 km (green)
- River Rumble - 60 minutes, 1.9 km (yellow)
- Cedar Climb - 2 hours, 3.9 km (orange)
- Ridge Lookout - 2 hours, 4.0 km (brown and red)
- Protea Hill - half a day, 4.2 km (red)
Participants are asked to bring suitable hydration such as a lightweight hydration pack or hip pouch, bottled water, sunscreen, a hat, suitable non-slip shoes, snacks, a lightweight windproof jacket and a fleece or midlayer as needed. Personal emergency items such as bandages and blister plasters are recommended. Optional items include fingerless gloves, hiking poles, a beanie, buffs and sunglasses.
Meeting is at Eight Bells Mountain Inn at the foot of Robinson Pass on the R328, between Mossel Bay and Oudtshoorn. After the walks there is an option to have coffee or lunch on the Indoor Sun Patio, Garden Terrace or in the Tea Garden depending on weather.
