Reservoir Dog : Backyard Ultra, Marton Reservoir

Reservoir Dog is a last-person-standing backyard ultra held at Marton Reservoir, Rangitīkei. Competitors run the same loop repeatedly: one circuit of 6.706 km around the reservoir, with about 84 m of elevation gain per lap. The route mixes graded walking track and single-track mountain bike trail, including nearly 3 km of graded track and roughly 1.5 km of single-track, finishing with a gentle downhill section.

Each lap begins on the hour and continues until only one runner remains. Before each lap the race director flips a coin to set direction; runners do not choose clockwise or anti-clockwise. Runners must return to the kennel before the bell for the next lap or they are out. The event allows solo entries and two-person teams. Solo entry fee is $50 NZD and team entry is $100 NZD per team. For teams, one bib is shared; either team member may run any lap, and the team is eliminated if neither member makes a bell. The team category ceases when five solo runners remain, after which only solos continue.

No on-course assistance is permitted; crews stay in the camp. Organisers may place small surprises on the course. Competitors are asked to bring a plate to share. The event is run by the Tūtaenui Stream Restoration Society at Marton Reservoir. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
