Reservoir Dog : Backyard ultra at Marton Reservoir
Reservoir Dog is a backyard ultra held at Marton Reservoir in the Rangitīkei. Competitors run a single loop of 6.706 km repeatedly, leaving on the hour and returning before the next bell; the event continues until one runner remains. There is a strict 60 minute cutoff each lap and only the final runner is declared the winner while all others receive a DNF.
The loop is the same every time and gains about 84 m of elevation per lap. Surface composition is largely graded walking track with a section of single‑track mountain bike trail of about 1.5 km. Before each lap the race director flips a coin to determine running direction, so laps may be clockwise or anti‑clockwise.
Support is limited on course. Crews remain in the camp area; athletes run alone on the loop. Organisers may place small surprises on the course but no formal assistance is provided while on a lap. The event provides basic facilities at the paddock including drinking water, toilets, lighting at night and a communal bonfire.
Entry options include solo entry for one athlete and a pairs team option with a single bib to be handed between teammates. Team entries finish when the field reaches a point where only solo runners remain. Competitors are asked to bring a plate to share for feed stops during the event.
