Event Format
Red's Backyard Ultra is a "last-one-standing" ultramarathon event. Participants must run a single loop of 6.7056 km every hour, on the hour. The race continues until only one runner remains, with all other runners recording a Did Not Finish (DNF). The event is described as a test of endurance where runners are both rivals and teammates, combining their efforts to complete as many loops, or "yards," as possible.
Course and Venue
The event takes place on a state cross-country course in Kembla Grange, New South Wales, Australia, approximately 1.5 hours south of Sydney. The loop features a mix of trail and cross-country surfaces with 35 feet of climb per lap. Runners and their support crews have access to a dedicated area for a personal aid station, as well as clubhouse canteen and bathroom facilities.

The 2026 edition is classified as a Silver-level event and will also host the Australian Team for the 2026 Backyard Ultra World Team Championships. The current record for the number of loops completed at this event is 57, achieved by Jonathan Ash and Barry Keem in 2024. The event has a participant capacity of 99 runners.
