Red Squirrel 10K
The Red Squirrel 10K is a trail race held on a Sunday in April. The event takes place within the Ainsdale National Nature Reserve, managed by Natural England. The reserve features wooded dunes that are home to various flora and fauna, including the red squirrel.
The course is approximately 10 km long. The route winds through wooded paths and includes an ascent of the highest dune peak before finishing through the woods. Potential course hazards include tree roots, branches, mud, and uneven ground. The event is chip-timed with shoe tags provided. Water stations are available at approximately the 5 km mark and at the finish.
All finishers receive a bespoke medal. Prizes are awarded for the first three male and female finishers and for various veteran age categories. The event is licensed by the Trail Running Association and is subject to UK Athletics rules.
Spectators are welcome, including those with dogs on leads, but certain items are not permitted on the course: buggies, Nordic walking poles, and running dogs. Participation is restricted to individuals aged 18 and over on the race date.
Proceeds from the event, after covering costs, are divided equally between Queenscourt Hospice and Southport Soup Kitchen. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
