Event Overview
The Red Squirrel 10K is a trail race taking place on Sunday, 19th April 2026. It is run through the Ainsdale National Nature Reserve. The event is organized by Southport Strollers Running Club in association with Natural England.
Course & Setting
The 10 km trail route winds through wooded paths within the National Nature Reserve. The finish includes a climb to the highest dune peak before a final run through the woods to the finish line. The dunes support a variety of flora and wildlife, including the endangered red squirrel. Participants will encounter natural trail hazards such as tree roots, branches, mud, and uneven ground. Event Details
- The race is chip-timed using a shoe tag provided on the day.
- All finishers receive a bespoke medal.
- Prizes are awarded for the first three male and female finishers, as well as in various age categories.
- Water stations are located at approximately 5 km and at the finish.
- The course will be marshalled and marked with temporary signage.
- The event is licensed by the Trail Running Association.
- Proceeds, after costs, are donated equally to Queenscourt Hospice and Southport Soup Kitchen.
Participant Information
- The minimum age for entry is 18 years.
- Buggies, Nordic walking poles, and dogs (except leashed dogs with spectators) are not permitted on the course.
- An optional commemorative tech t-shirt can be purchased with entry.
- Entry for UK Athletics members includes a £2 discount.
