Event Overview
The DC Raymond M. Downey "Forever Running" Memorial 5K Run/Walk is a commemorative event. It honors the memory of Deputy Chief Raymond M. Downey, who died on September 11, 2001, as well as all those who lost their lives that day and from subsequent 9/11-related illnesses. The 2026 edition marks the event's 25th anniversary.
Event Format
The event offers two participation options:
- DC Raymond M Downey "Forever Running" Memorial 5K Run/Walk – A live, in-person event on Sunday, June 21, 2026.
- Run Anywhere Virtual 5K – A virtual option where participants can run from June 21 to June 28, 2026.
Course & Awards
The live 5K course is described as fast and flat, running through Deer Park and passing down D.C. Raymond M. Downey Memorial Road. It is USATF certified and sanctioned.
Awards include plaques for the first-place male and female winners. Top finishers are recognized in numerous age categories, from 10 & under to 95-100. Special awards are also given for categories such as top cancer survivor, top Deer Park teacher, top FDNY firefighter, and top finishers among firefighters, law enforcement, and military personnel. There is a kids' fun run with no fee.
