Rakiura Challenge Trail Run
The Rakiura Challenge is a 32 km trail race held on Stewart Island, running between Horseshoe Bay and Oban and using much of the Rakiura Track. The course passes coastal shorelines and native forest, beginning with a road section to Lee Bay, then coastal trail toward Little River, a shoreline section that follows the high tide mark at times, Peters Point and Māori Beach, a swing bridge crossing, and a forested ridge overlooking Port William. The finish is along the Oban beachfront by the township sign.
The event is scheduled for 3 October 2026 and is organised as a weekend programme. Entrants must plan for a two night stay on Stewart Island covering the Friday and Saturday nights. The field is limited to 250 runners. Competitors must be 15 years or older; those younger than 15 may be considered on a case by case basis.
Organisers require all participants to carry compulsory safety gear in addition to clothing worn during the run. Required items include a thermal long sleeved top and leggings, a thermal hat, gloves, a wind and waterproof jacket, a survival blanket, and a drink system holding at least two litres plus food suitable for a four to eight hour run or walk. All competitors must attend a safety briefing before the race. Race base and operations are run from Oban with radio control, marshals and emergency support including water taxis and helicopter evacuation when needed. Organisers may withdraw or turn back competitors who have not reached designated checkpoints by published cut off times. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
