Event overview
The Rainow 5 is a small trail/fell race held in Rainow on the edge of the Peak District. The course is a hilly footpath route of 5 miles (8 km) that includes White Nancy and the Kerridge ridge, with about 230 m of ascent (around 750 ft). The event is licensed under the Fell Runners Association (FRA) and has a permit with associated UK Athletics insurance. Entrants must be 16 years or older.
Entries, numbers and post-race
Pre-entry is used and entries can close when the race is full; limited entry on the day has been allowed in some years. Entry fees listed in recent years were in the region of £9 for FRA members and £10 for non-members. The race typically attracts around 250-300 runners, with 285 finishers recorded in 2023. Teas and cakes are served after the race.
Organisation, history and beneficiaries
The race is organised by a club member with support from Macclesfield Harriers. The first running of the event was in 1989. All proceeds are donated to local organisations and charities, including local mountain rescue and community projects such as the village institute, footpath restoration groups, and wildlife conservation in the Kerridge area.
