Railroad Reckoning (presented by U.S. Air Force Special Warfare)
Railroad Reckoning is a loop-based running event held at Railroad Park Pavilion in downtown Birmingham, Alabama (1600 1st Ave S, Birmingham, AL 35233) on September 5, 2026. The course is a roughly 0.78 mile loop around Railroad Park that participants repeat as long as they meet a series of decreasing time cutoffs.
Runners begin at the Pavilion and complete the first loop within a 12 minute cutoff. The second loop cutoff is 11 minutes 50 seconds, and each subsequent loop decreases by 10 seconds. Participants continue until they miss a cutoff or choose to stop. A fully stocked aid station will be available on course. Each finisher receives a certificate showing total distance covered. Awards are presented to the final three male and final three female runners still running when the event concludes.
The event materials note several purposes runners might pursue, including running a first longer distance, attempting a new distance personal record, or pursuing the longest known run within Railroad Park. Depending on performance, completing enough loops can equal marathon distance; the reference marathon loop pace is 8:20 per mile.
A portion of each registration benefits Freshwater Land Trust, an organization that conserves land and builds trails across Central Alabama. Participants receive a custom Railroad Reckoning shirt; registration by August 7 guarantees a shirt, and additional shirts may be available for later registrants.
