Rail-Trail Duathlon
The Rail-Trail Duathlon is a combined cycling and running event held near Shonto, Arizona on June 20, 2026. The course follows a rail-trail that parallels the Black Mesa and Lake Powell rail bed and includes both riding and a trail run.
Course format and distances include:
- Bike: out and back segments of about five miles each
- Run: a trail run of approximately 10 kilometers
Aid stations along the route supply Honey Stinger energy gels, salty and sweet snacks, fresh fruit, Gatorade, and water. Course support also includes portable toilets and course personnel. Organizers note the route may be revised and alternative routes may be used for bad weather.
Registration is offered online and onsite with age-based pricing: participants 18 and under pay $10 and adults pay $40. Registration includes an event t-shirt, a Rail-Trail towel, a poster, a sticker, and a finisher medal. A team relay option is available where one teammate runs and the other bikes; teams must register each member at the adult rate and notify organizers of leg assignments.
Participants should prepare for warm summertime conditions and bring appropriate hydration, raingear, and footwear for potential wet or muddy sections. Awards will be given to top overall finishers and age-group winners. The event is organized by the nonprofit NavajoYES. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
