Event Overview
The Navajo Nation Last Man Standing is an endurance event held at the Shonto Marketplace Trailhead in Arizona. The course is situated on the Rail-Trail Route, which consists of a 4-mile loop primarily on a dirt path. Participants encounter various terrain including sandy sections and a short rocky area near the turnaround point. The race follows a format where runners alternate between routes heading east and west of the start/finish area.
Competition Rules
Participants must complete a 4-mile segment every hour. The first segment begins at the top of the hour, and runners have exactly 60 minutes to return to the finish line. Those who finish within the hour may continue to the next segment at the start of the following hour. The event concludes if a runner fails to complete a segment within the time limit or chooses to stop. The competition is limited to a maximum of 25 laps, totaling 100 miles. If multiple runners remain at the start of the 25th lap, the first person to complete that final lap is declared the winner.
Support and Facilities
The start/finish area serves as a central race camp where participants can set up personal stations with chairs, tables, and extra gear. A well-stocked aid station provides:
- Hydration: Water, electrolyte drinks, coffee, tea, and soda.
- Nutrition: Energy gels, waffles, fruit, salty snacks, sandwiches, and wraps.
- Medical support and portable toilets.
This is a cup-less event, and runners are required to provide their own handheld bottles or hydration packs. Registered participants receive an event shirt, poster, decal, and neck gaiter. Pacers are permitted to join runners after the 20-mile mark. All proceeds from the event support community health and wellness programs on the Navajo Nation.
