Race for the Roses
The Race for the Roses is a running and walking event held at Queeny Park in Ballwin, Missouri. Hosted at the Smith Pavilion, the event serves as a tribute to Kentucky Derby Week and functions as a fundraiser for the Shriners Hospital in St. Louis. Specifically, the proceeds support the Moolah Shrine Clowns' Red Sneaker Program, which provides footwear for children in burn units.
Participants can choose between two primary distances:
- 5K: A timed run through the park.
- 1K Family Walk: An untimed walk suitable for families with children.
The event features pre-race entertainment provided by Moolah clowns, including balloon animal creations. A "Best Kentucky Derby Themed Hat" contest is also held, with judging conducted by Kiwanis Club members. Participants entering the hat contest must register at a designated table on the morning of the event.
Registered runners in the 5K category receive a race shirt as part of their entry. While the 1K Family Walk does not include a shirt, participants have the option to purchase one during the registration process. Awards are presented to the top overall male and female finishers, including roses and plaques. Age group medals are also awarded in various categories ranging from 19 and under to 70 and over. Packet pickup is organized on the Friday preceding the race at a local running store in Chesterfield. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
