Prince of Wales Island Marathon
The Prince of Wales Island Marathon is a USATF certified marathon (26.2 miles, certification number AK14007FW) held on Prince of Wales Island in the southern Alaska panhandle. The event offers a full marathon, a half marathon, and relay team categories. Race times may be used as time qualifiers for the Boston Marathon.
The out and back course starts near Sunnahae Mountain at Craig High School and follows the Klawock Channel north through the village of Klawock. The route continues along Boundary Road onto Big Salt Lake Highway, with a middle section that passes through more mountainous terrain. The half marathon follows the same corridor but does not include the more mountainous portion. Wildlife sightings are common along the course.
There are eight aid stations spaced along the marathon course. Stations provide hydration, basic nutrition such as fruit and lemon drops, first aid supplies, and clothing drop bags. Support vans cover the course and provide rides and relay support. Relay teams use designated exchange points; standard teams consist of four or eight members. Local school teams of Kindergarten through sixth grade run assigned half marathon exchanges.
Typical race day weather ranges from cool to mild given the Tongass rain forest setting, with rain and light mist possible. Registration details include an early bird deadline of April 15, no paper registrations, and a non refundable policy. Category changes and race transfers are allowed with fees and must be requested before the registration deadline. Contact is available via the event Facebook page messenger.
