Prairie Nightmare Backyard Ultra at Echo Valley Provincial Park
The event follows a Backyard Ultra format where one participant remains the last person standing and others are recorded as DNF if they do not meet the requirement. The course is a 6.706 km loop on gentle trails. Runners must complete each lap within the allotted hourly period; this repeats hourly and the race ends when the final runner or runners either concede or fail to finish the distance within the time allowed. Competitors must be at the start line and begin racing at the start signal; failure to do so results in a DNF.
A Prairie Daydream option serves as an introduction to Backyard Races and trail running. Participants in this option run the same 6.706 km loop and may begin their first lap later in the day up to a specified cutoff. They may run between one and five consecutive laps without obligation to continue further; an extension beyond five laps can be requested from the race director and is subject to the stage of the race.
Practical details include a designated area for personal gear and crew, camping available on site for the race weekend, a cupless format so runners must bring refillable bottles or cups, and participants are expected to supply their own food and drink. Park water is drinkable. Race day charges apply for trailers and for tent or car camping. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
