Pioneer Crossings Relay Race
The Pioneer Crossings Relay is a long course running relay held July 9 to July 10, 2027, from Twin Bridges to Virginia City, Montana. The route covers 175 miles over 36 legs with about 10,000 feet of total elevation gain.
The event uses a classic 12 person relay model for the Standard division, where each runner completes three legs. Standard teams are divided into two vans of six runners each. While runners 1 through 6 run their legs, runners 7 through 12 travel to the next transition; the handoff occurs when runner 6 passes to runner 7. Typical finish times for teams range from 24 to 32 hours.
Alternative team formats are offered on the same course: Ultra teams of six runners complete the course with each runner taking more legs, and Wild Card teams may include three to ten runners. The course passes mountain terrain, open high plain areas and forested sections between the start in Twin Bridges and the finish in Virginia City.
