Event Overview
The Pioneer Crossings Relay is a long-distance relay race in Montana. The total course distance is 175 miles, consisting of 36 individual legs and featuring approximately 10,000 feet of elevation gain. The route starts in Twin Bridges and finishes in Virginia City.
Team Formats
The event offers three different team formats:
- Standard: A 12-person team, typically divided into two vans of six runners each. Each runner completes three legs of the course.
- Ultra: A six-person team that completes the entire 175-mile course.
- Wild Card: A team format for groups of 3 to 10 runners.
The relay follows a model where one group of runners from a Standard team runs while the other group rests and travels ahead to the next transition point. The event typically takes teams between 24 and 32 hours to complete.
