Pioneer Crossings Relay Race
The Pioneer Crossings Relay is a 175 mile team relay across Montana, running from Twin Bridges to Virginia City. The course includes 36 sequential legs and about 10,000 feet of total elevation gain. The route passes through mountain sections, wide open sky areas, and forested stretches.
The event follows a classic 12 person relay model for the Standard category. In that format each runner completes three legs. Standard teams are organized into two vans of six runners; while one van runs its legs, the other travels to the next transition station where the handover occurs. This rotation continues until all 36 legs are complete. Typical completion time for a full team is 24 to 32 hours.
Alternative team formats are offered. The Ultra category is for six runner teams that cover the entire course, and the Wild Card category is for teams of three to ten runners.
