Pack Trail Race

The Pack Trail Race is a trail event located in Valdez, Alaska, featuring a 4-mile out and back course. The race takes place on a historic route originally constructed in 1898 by the US Army to connect the Port of Valdez to the Klondike Goldfields. Historically known as the "Pack Trail," the path served as a vital access point to interior Alaska before being upgraded to a wagon road and eventually becoming the Richardson Highway.

The specific section used for the race was abandoned when the highway was rerouted along the Lowe River. After remaining unused for nearly 90 years, the trail was relocated and cleared in 1997 and 1998 using hand tools to preserve its historical character. Participants can see remnants of the original telegraph line, which was installed in 1900, along the route.

The event starts at the Old Richardson Highway Trailhead. Participation is limited to a maximum of 40 entrants. Due to limited space at the trailhead, carpooling is recommended for all attendees. Registration is available onsite for those paying with cash. The course offers a direct experience with a reclaimed segment of Alaskan history that was impacted by significant flooding in 2006.
