About the race
The Oyster Catcher Trail Run is a staged coastal trail running event along the Oyster Catcher hiking route between the Gouritz River Mouth and Mossel Bay on the Garden Route of South Africa. The event follows single-track hiking trails, beaches, dunes, cliffs and fynbos and passes notable places such as Gourikwa Nature Reserve, Boggomsbaai, Vleesbaai and the St Blaize hiking trail. The route is named for the African Black Oyster Catcher, a locally found wader, and the event includes information and awareness about the species and the fragile coastal ecosystem.
Format options are a 2-day or 3-day trail run with daily distances as follows:
- 2-day: Day 1 15 km, Day 2 16 km
- 3-day: Day 1 15 km, Day 2 15 km, Day 3 16 km
Entry fees are R3,500 for the 2-day event and R4,500 for the 3-day event. Entries are limited (150 places noted) and pre-entries close before the event. Included with entry are route permissions on private property, one water table per day, a finish water table, technical garment, goodie bag, headband, daily light lunch, bus transport between some starts and finishes, medical cover, finishers medal and a photographer. A luxury tented race village with prebooked meals and limited tent availability is offered at Boggomsbaai. Competitors must carry compulsory safety equipment such as a cell phone (in a dry bag), space blanket, backpack, whistle, emergency food, water bottles, sunscreen and a waterproof outer shell.
