Outrun Hunger 5K and 1-Mile Fun Walk
The Outrun Hunger event is organized by Rachel’s Table of Western Massachusetts to support food assistance programs in Hampden, Hampshire, and Franklin Counties. The event takes place at Forest Park in Springfield, Massachusetts, with options for local and remote participation.
Participants can choose from several event categories:
- Outrun Hunger 5k race
- 1-mile fun walk
- 5k virtual race
The 1-mile fun walk is an untimed event where costumes are encouraged, particularly food-themed attire. For the in-person 5k race, awards are categorized by gender (male, female, and non-binary) across various age groups, including 12 and under, 13-19, 20-40, 40-60, and 60+. Virtual participants can complete their 5k between May 1 and May 17 from any location, including on treadmills or self-mapped courses, and upload their times to the official results page.
The event serves as a fundraiser for hunger relief initiatives, such as food delivery, gleaning, and the Growing Gardens program. Attendees are invited to bring non-perishable food items for donation to local agencies. Registration for the event includes additional benefits, such as discounted tickets to the Zoo at Forest Park for the day of the race. Parking is available at the park for a fee.
