Event Overview
The Outrun Hunger 5K Race is a charity running and walking event organized by Rachel’s Table of Western Massachusetts. The primary goal is to raise funds for programs addressing food insecurity in Hampden, Hampshire, and Franklin Counties. Funds support initiatives such as food donation and delivery, a Growing Gardens program, and aid for over 65 local agencies.
Event Details
The event takes place on May 17 and offers several participation options:
- Outrun Hunger 5k race
- 1-mile fun walk
- 5k virtual race (available from May 1 to May 17)
- PJ Library Story Walk
The in-person events are held at Forest Park in Springfield, Massachusetts. Parking within the park costs $3. Participants can also join virtually from anywhere.
The 1-mile fun walk is not a timed event. Costumes are welcome, with a special mention for food-themed outfits and spirited teams.
Additional Activities
The PJ Library Story Walk is a separate, family-oriented activity for children up to age 8 and their parents. It involves walking through the story "Mitzvah Pizza" to learn about food insecurity. Registration for this includes a discounted ticket to the Forest Park Zoo on the event day.
Participants are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items, which will be donated to Rachel’s Table's network of agencies after the event.
Fundraising
Participants have the option to create a personal fundraising page. Those who raise $100 or more will receive a $25 refund on their registration fee. Event registration and volunteering also include discounted tickets for the Forest Park Zoo. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
