Event Overview
The Onarga ALA Poppy 5K is an annual running and walking event organized by the American Legion Auxiliary Unit. The race centers around the red poppy, a symbol used since World War I to honor veterans who served and died in military conflicts. The proceeds from this event are dedicated to supporting veterans and their families.
The event features the following distance:
- 3.1 Miles (5K)
Course and Logistics
The race starts and finishes near the historic Onarga American Legion Post 551 building, situated on the eastern side of Durham Park. Participants follow a flat, paved route that leads them around the park and through the residential streets of Onarga. Members of the American Legion family are positioned along the course to provide direction and support.
Registration and packet pickup take place at the American Legion building, where on-site restrooms are also available. Parking is limited at the Legion building, but additional space is available at the park swimming pool and Iroquois West Middle School. Those parking at the school should account for a 6-minute walk to the registration area.
Participation and Awards
This event is open to participants of all ages, and strollers are allowed on the course. Each participant receives a t-shirt and a swag bag containing items from local businesses. Prizes are awarded to the top male and female runners, the top walker, and the top male and female youth participants between the ages of 5 and 14.
