Northern Nipmuck Trail Race

The Northern Nipmuck Trail Race is an out-and-back trail event in Union, CT, organized by the Shenipsit Striders. The advertised distance is 16 miles, though the course may measure a little less due to technical terrain and elevation. The route runs along the Nipmuck Trail through Yale-Myers Forest, starts across the road from Bigelow Hollow State Park, crosses Barlow Mill Road at Two Pipes at about 4 miles, and turns around at Boston Hollow before returning the same way.

Parking is at Bigelow Hollow State Park and is noted as the limiting factor for entries. There is a trail from the parking area that avoids walking along the road. No race day registration is available; a waitlist is used and waitlisted runners are likely to be added. Awards and event swag are not provided.

Aid is minimal and will be available at Two Pipes and Boston Hollow, listed as miles 4, 8, and 12. The full course is blazed blue and will have some additional flagging at tricky spots; runners are responsible for navigation and for any additional distance they may run. Net proceeds after event costs support organizations that maintain local trails, and proceeds from a previous edition helped fund a bridge at the north end of Breakneck Pond. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
