Event

The Northern Nipmuck Trail Race is a trail running event in Union, Connecticut. The advertised distance is 16 miles, though the organizer notes the course is probably a little shorter due to technical terrain and vertical gain. The field is capped at 100 entrants and there is no race day registration. Early registration fee is $25 plus the registration platform fee. Registration opens January 1, 2026.

Course and aid

The out-and-back course starts just across the road from Bigelow Hollow State Park and heads south on the Nipmuck Trail through the Yale-Myers Forest to a turnaround at Boston Hollow (also referred to as Alpacaville). The trail crosses Barlow Mill Road (Two Pipes) at about 4 miles; return follows the same route. The route is blazed blue for its full length and additional flagging will be placed at a few tricky spots. Minimal aid will be provided at approximate miles 4, 8, and 12. Runners are expected to navigate the course themselves.

Logistics and other details

Parking is available in Bigelow Hollow State Park; a signed trail from the parking area avoids walking along the road to the start. Awards and race swag are not provided. Net proceeds after event costs will be donated to organizations that support local trails; proceeds from the 2022 race primarily funded a new bridge at the north end of Breakneck Pond. A course map and a GPX file are provided by the organizer. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
