Event

The Northern Nipmuck Trail Race is a trail running event held in Union, CT. The race is limited to 100 entrants and there is no race-day registration. Early registration is listed at $25 plus a registration fee. Awards and event swag are not provided. Proceeds after costs are donated to organizations that support local trails; proceeds from the 2022 race funded a new bridge at the north end of Breakneck Pond. The race was revived in 2022 after a hiatus that began in 2012. Parking is available at Bigelow Hollow State Park and the race start is located across the road from the park. A signed trail from the parking area avoids walking along the road.

Course

The advertised distance is 16 miles, though the course is noted as likely a little shorter. The route follows the Nipmuck Trail south through the Yale-Myers Forest. At about 4 miles the trail crosses Barlow Mill Road (Two Pipes), and continues another 4 miles to the turnaround at Boston Hollow (the northern end of the Nipmuck Marathon). The return follows the same route to the finish. Terrain is technical with notable vertical. Minimal aid is provided at approximately miles 4, 8, and 12. The course is blazed blue and will have additional flagging at some tricky spots; runners are responsible for navigation. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
