Northern Nipmuck Trail Race
The Northern Nipmuck Trail Race is a trail event in Union, CT organized by the Shenipsit Striders. The course is advertised as 16 miles, out and back on the Nipmuck Trail, starting across the road from Bigelow Hollow State Park and passing through the Yale-Myers Forest to a turnaround at Boston Hollow. The advertised distance may be slightly less; technical terrain and elevation account for the difference.
The route crosses Barlow Mill Road at about four miles (Two Pipes) and uses blue blazes for navigation, with additional flagging at a few tricky spots. Minimal aid will be provided at approximate mile markers 4, 8, and 12. Parking is at Bigelow Hollow State Park, and a marked trail from the lot avoids walking along the road to the start; parking capacity limits entries.
There is no race day registration; a waitlist is used to fill openings. Registration opens January 1, 2027. Awards and race swag are not provided. The event was revived in 2022 after a previous hiatus, and net proceeds support local trail organizations and projects, including funding for a bridge at the north end of Breakneck Pond.
