Event Overview
The North Berwick Novice Triathlon and Aquathlon is an annual multi-sport event held at the North Berwick Sports Centre. The event is organized by volunteers and members of the East Lothian Triathlon Club, with a focus on participants who are new to these sports. The competition includes individual and relay options for the triathlon, alongside several aquathlon categories for different age groups.
The triathlon consists of a 250 m pool swim (10 lengths), a 9.3 km cycle on open public roads, and a 2.9 km run consisting of three laps on grass playing fields. The aquathlon features varying distances based on the participant's age:
- TriStar Start (Age 8): 50 m swim and 600 m run.
- TriStar 1 (Age 9-10): 150 m swim and 1.1 km run.
- TriStar 2 (Age 11-12): 250 m swim and 2 km run.
- TriStar 3 (Age 13-14): 250 m swim and 2.9 km run.
- Youth/Junior and Adult: 250 m swim and 2.9 km run.
Course Details
The swim phase for both events takes place in a 25 m pool using a ladder format with 15-second intervals between swimmers. The triathlon cycle route follows quiet roads to the south of North Berwick with one right-hand turn. Because roads remain open to traffic, participants must follow the highway code. The run course for all adult and older youth categories takes place on the school playing fields adjacent to the leisure centre. The surface is grass and may become slippery in wet conditions.
The transition area is located in the Sports Centre car park. For safety reasons, participants must keep their helmets fastened while in contact with their bicycles. Use of headphones or any devices that impair hearing is prohibited during the race.
Participation Requirements
Individual triathlon entries are open to those aged 15 and over, though 15-year-olds require parental permission for the cycling portion. Relay teams can consist of two or three members, with specific age restrictions applied to different legs of the race. Participants who are not members of a British Triathlon Home Nation are required to obtain a Race Pass for insurance and licensing purposes.
