North American Wife Carrying Championship®
The 26th Annual North American Wife Carrying Championship takes place at Sunday River in Newry, Maine on October 10, 2026. The event is part of Sunday River’s Fall Fest weekend, which includes live music, food, scenic chairlift rides, and a beer garden.
Teams of one man and one woman compete on a 278 yards obstacle course on foot. The course includes log hurdles, a sand trap, and a water hazard called the "Widow Maker." Rounds include qualifying heats; the fastest two teams from qualifying advance to a final heat to determine the championship.
Teams do not have to be legally married, but both partners must be at least 21 years old on race day to qualify for the world championship. Carrying technique is not restricted; teams may use a traditional piggyback or the Estonian style with legs over the shoulders as long as the partner remains on board.
Registration opens January 4, 2026, and closes October 10, 2026. The registration fee is $40.00. Prizes for top finishers include the wife’s weight in beer and five times her weight in cash. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
