Course and logistics

Courses run mainly on technical dirt trails and include steep hills; hiking or trekking poles are permitted. Routes use sections of the historic Western States trail, cross No Hands Bridge, include the K2 training hill and Overlook Hill, and the 50K crosses Highway 49 onto the Wendell T. Robie trail into the Auburn State Recreation Area. Courses are marked with colored surveyor ribbon and laminated signs; blue ribbons mark wrong-way trails.

Aid stations provide a range of foods and beverages (energy gels, chews, stroopwafels, trail mix, soda, Skratch Labs hydration, fruit, PB&J, and similar items) and basic first aid supplies. The event is cupless; runners must carry their own water bottle or reusable cup. Organizers recommend carrying at least one 20 oz bottle. Drop bag service is not available. There is an 8.5 hour time limit for the 50K. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
