Night Howler 50 : Hoover, AL
The Night Howler 50 is an overnight 50 mile ultramarathon held at Hoover Sports Park East. The course is a 2.5 mile loop that starts and finishes at the building in the middle of the baseball fields, where the main aid station is located. Runners cross a bridge above the Cahaba River and descend four flights of stairs into wooded trails. The course is generally flat with a couple of small inclines and declines.
Each competitor must complete twenty laps to reach the 50 mile distance. Official finishers must complete the distance within a 16 hour cutoff to receive the custom belt buckle. The event is for participants aged 19 and older.
The start/finish area provides space for participant setups and crew tents outside the race course. Runners may receive aid in the start/finish area between laps and pacers are allowed on course. Two parking lots adjacent to the course are available.
Packet pickup occurs on race day at the start/finish area; runners must present photo identification and will receive a race bib and a custom t-shirt. The event is rain or shine. Organizers provide a full-service aid station with food and hydration each lap, including pickles, fruit, and hot options at certain times. This is a cup-less event; runners must bring their own cup or bottle.
Awards include a custom t-shirt for all entrants, a belt buckle for finishers within the cutoff, and custom medals for the top three male and top three female finishers. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
