The Night Howler 50 is a 50-mile ultramarathon held at Hoover Sports Park East in Hoover, Alabama (2649 Old Rocky Ridge Road). The event is organized by The Running Birds and uses a lap format. Registration closes June 26.

Course, distance, and cutoffs

The course is a 2.5-mile loop that is clearly marked and runs from the building in the middle of the baseball fields. The route crosses a bridge above the Cahaba River, then descends four flights of stairs into wooded trails. Runners complete twenty laps to reach the 50-mile distance. The official time cutoff is 16 hours; finishers within the cutoff receive a custom belt buckle. All participants must be 19 or older.

Logistics, aid, and rules

The start/finish area houses the primary aid station, accessible each lap, and offers food and hydration including pickles, fruit, and occasional hot options. The event is cup-less; runners must provide their own cups or bottles. There is space for crews to set up tents or personal aid stations outside the course. Pacers are allowed on course. There is no early packet pickup; on-site pickup at the start/finish provides a race bib and a custom t-shirt and requires photo identification. No refunds are issued; entries may be transferred or deferred through the organizer.

Conditions and equipment

The race begins at sunset and will take place mostly in darkness, so headlamps and extra batteries are recommended. The event is rain or shine; typical June temperatures listed for the area note warm and humid conditions. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
