Night Howler 50 : Hoover Sports Park East
The Night Howler 50 is a 50-mile ultramarathon run mostly in darkness at Hoover Sports Park East in Hoover, Alabama. The course is a 2.5-mile loop that is clearly marked and starts/finishes at the building in the middle of the baseball fields. The aid station is located at the start/finish area and is accessible each lap.
The loop crosses a bridge above the Cahaba River and descends four flights of stairs into wooded trails. The terrain is generally flat with a few small inclines and declines. Competitors must complete twenty laps to cover the 50-mile distance. A 16-hour time cutoff applies for official finishers and for receiving the custom belt buckle; this cutoff equates to a 19:12 per mile pace.
Participants must be 19 years of age or older. There is space in the start/finish area for tents or personal aid setups outside the race course. Pacers are allowed on course at any time. Race day packet pickup occurs at the start/finish line; runners receive a race bib and a custom event t-shirt and should bring a photo ID for identification.
The event provides a full-service aid station with food and hydration each lap. Typical offerings include pickles, fruits, and occasional hot food; this is a cup-less event, so competitors must bring their own cup or bottle. The event operates rain or shine. No refunds are issued; entries may be transferred or deferred. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
