Night Howler 50 (Hoover, AL)
The Night Howler 50 is a 50 mile ultramarathon held at Hoover Sports Park East in Hoover, Alabama. The race is run as a lap event on a 2.5 mile loop; competitors must complete twenty laps to cover the 50 mile distance.
The course is clearly marked and starts and finishes at the building in the middle of the baseball fields. The loop crosses a bridge above the Cahaba River and descends four flights of stairs into wooded trails. The terrain is generally flat with a few small inclines and declines. A full service aid station is located at the start/finish area and is accessible each lap; typical offerings include pickles, various fruits, and occasional hot food. This is a cup free event; runners must bring their own cups or bottles.
All participants must be 19 or older. Finishers who complete the 50 mile distance within the 16 hour time limit will receive a custom belt buckle; the 16 hour cutoff corresponds to a 19:12 per mile pace. Packet pickup occurs on race day at the start/finish area where runners receive a bib and a custom event t shirt and must present photo identification. There is space for crews and personal aid setups outside the race course, and pacers are allowed on course.
