About the race
Night Challenge 3: Pier Gates is a night mountain running event on marked routes in County Wicklow. Two courses are offered.
- 11 km long course with about 450 m climb, for runners aged 18 or older.
- 5 km short course with about 170 m climb, for runners aged 14 or older.
The long course is mostly hard pack trail with some boardwalk. The short course follows forest trails with boardwalk and some technical sections where grippy shoes and reduced speed at night are advised. The event is classified as moderate difficulty with ascent between 200 m and 500 m and a course length greater than 10 km for the long route. GPS devices are allowed and the route is fully marked.
Mandatory Level B kit must be carried. Required items include a headtorch, waterproof jacket, hat or buff, gloves, whistle, charged mobile phone with an emergency number stored, and a foil blanket or bivvy bag. Organisers will confirm the exact kit to carry on the day and may perform random checks. Failure to have required kit can lead to denied entry or disqualification.
Parking and registration are at the Lough Tay / Lough Dan carpark. Carparking charges apply with reduced rates for shared cars. Prizegiving takes place at the same carpark and cake will be provided. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
