Night Challenge 1: Crone Maulin

The Night Challenge 1: Crone Maulin is a night trail running event held in County Wicklow. This event serves as the first of four races in the Leinster Night Challenge League. The race takes place on the mountain of Maulin and features technical terrain that requires runners to be equipped for night conditions.

Participants can choose between two route options:

  • Long Course: A 7.4 km counter-clockwise loop with approximately 407 m of ascent. This course is open to runners age 18 and older.
  • Short Course: A 6 km route with approximately 239 m of ascent. This course is open to both runners and walkers age 14 and older.

The 7.4 km route begins at the Crone Car park barrier. Runners follow a wide trail before ascending through woods and up the side of Maulin. From the summit, the path transitions to a rocky section leading to the Wicklow Way. The descent passes the Powerscourt Waterfall overlook before returning to the car park finish. Both routes are fully marked, and the use of GPS is permitted.

Safety requirements include mandatory kit at Level B. Runners must carry a waterproof jacket, hat or buff, gloves, a whistle, a charged mobile phone with emergency numbers, and a foil blanket or bivvy bag. Because the event takes place at night, a head torch is mandatory, and a backup light source is recommended. Headphones are not permitted during the race for safety reasons.

The event is located at Crone Woods car park, which is found by taking the Kilmacanogue turn off the N11 motorway and following signs toward Powerscourt Waterfall. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
