Mweelrea
Mweelrea is a mountain race in County Mayo held on Saturday 13th June 2026. The course distance is 10.70 km with a climb of 766 m. The event is rated difficulty 9 for difficult terrain, over 500 m ascent and over 10 km. The route is not fully marked and GPS use is not allowed. The race counts for the Irish Championship and the Connacht Championship.
The route starts at Silverstrand carpark. Runners follow the road for about 1 km, then a farmers track for about 500 m and pass through a gate. From that gate the route is unmarked until the col, the low point between the two peaks. The final 1 km from the col to the summit will be marked with IMRA flags and this marked section must be followed both up and back. From the col the return to the gate and the road back to Silverstrand is free route. There is a faint track alongside the river to the col but in poor visibility other tracks can be misleading.
Mandatory kit is Level C and includes a waterproof jacket with integrated hood and taped seams; hat or buff; gloves; whistle; charged mobile phone with emergency number stored; foil blanket or bivvy bag; waterproof full leg cover; means to carry at least 500 mL water; emergency food; map and compass. Kit checks and random inspections may be carried out and lack of required items may result in denial of entry or disqualification.
Parking and registration are at Silver Strand Car Park. IMRA has reserved 20 camping pitches at Connemara Caravan and Camping Park. Each reserved pitch can hold two 1 to 2 person tents, one 4 person tent, or one camper van. Facilities include hot showers and a campers kitchen with charging plugs, sinks, kettle, fridge freezer and a wash up area. Fires that touch the ground are not permitted and the campsite enforces a quiet time from 10pm. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
