Event
The MTC Oilliphéist is a single-day ultra race that forms Day 8 of the MTC MizMal® fourteen-day end-to-end of Ireland and is part of the Mount to Coast End to End Challenge Series. The race edition shown is the first. The advertised total distance is 58.2 miles. Start and finish locations are Nox Hotel, Galway, and The Woodfield Hotel, Clifden, Galway.
Entry is limited to 20 race-only competitors plus an allowance of 20 MizMal® competitors, for a maximum of 40 starters. Standard entry is listed at £90.00; a race package including an embroidered shirt and hi-viz jacket is listed at £155.00. All finishers receive an Oilliphéist medal. Male and female champions will receive trophies which are currently in the design stage. The event is cup-free; competitors must bring a reusable cup.
Course and logistics
The route largely follows the MizMal® route provided by Wild Atlantic Cycling and has preset cut-off points based on a minimum average speed of 4.0 mph; competitors falling below this minimum may be withdrawn. Maps and GPX files are provided only to entrants and are emailed about four weeks before the event. Organisers issue tracking devices with SOS functionality for real-time monitoring.
A mandatory kit list is enforced and includes a backpack, head torch with spare batteries, provided route maps, compass or GPS device, whistle, mobile phone, basic first-aid kit, emergency food (two chocolate bars) and a waterproof map case.
