There are preset cut-off times at checkpoints based on a minimum average speed of 4.0 mph; competitors who fall below this requirement may be withdrawn. Checkpoints are positioned roughly every 9 to 11 miles along the route and provide food such as malt loaf, sandwiches, sweets, squash, cola and water. The event is cup-free and competitors must bring a reusable cup.

Competitors must carry mandatory kit including a backpack, head torch with spare batteries, provided route maps, compass or GPS device, whistle, mobile phone, basic first aid and emergency food. Organisers will issue tracking devices with SOS capability and provide GPX and maps to entrants before the event. Finishers receive an Oilliphéist medal and male and female champions receive trophies. Entry fees are listed as £90 for the race and £155 for the race plus clothing package.
