Event Overview
The MTC Oilliphéist is an ultra marathon with a distance of 58 miles. The event takes place on the 14th of May, 2027. It is part of the Mount to Coast End to End Challenge Series and also serves as day 8 of the MTC MizMal®, a 14-day multi-day event. Participants enter a field capped at 40 runners, with a minimum speed requirement of 4 mph enforced at checkpoints.
Route and Logistics
The point-to-point course starts at the Nox Hotel in Galway and finishes at the Woodfield Hotel in Clifden, Galway. The route largely follows the MizMal® cycling route. There are five checkpoints along the course at Ballynahown, the R336, Furnace Road, Derryrush, and Lough Nacoogarrow. GPS files and detailed maps are provided to registered participants approximately four weeks before the event.
Rules and Requirements
The event has a mandatory kit list. Required items include a backpack, head torch with spare batteries, the provided maps, a compass or GPS device, a whistle, a mobile phone, an emergency food pack, and a basic first aid kit. The event is cup-free, so participants must bring their own reusable cup. A strict 4 mph average pace must be maintained; runners who fall below this pace may be withdrawn from the race. A personal tracking device with an SOS button is provided to each competitor.
Registration and Finisher Items
Entry fees are non-refundable. An option to defer to the following year is available up to four weeks before the event for a fee. A basic entry or a "Plus Race Package" which includes an embroidered race shirt and a hi-viz jacket can be selected. All finishers receive a bespoke Oilliphéist medal. Trophies are awarded to the male and female champions. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
