MTC Oilliphéist
The MTC Oilliphéist is a single-day ultra marathon covering a distance of 58 miles (58.2 miles). The event takes place in County Galway, Ireland, and is part of the Mount to Coast End to End Challenge Series. It serves as day eight of the fourteen-day MizMal end-to-end challenge of Ireland. The race follows a point-to-point route from Galway to Clifden.
The course begins at the Nox Hotel in Galway and concludes at the Woodfield Hotel in Clifden. Much of the journey follows the Wild Atlantic Way and includes five intermediate checkpoints at approximately 9-mile intervals:
- 58.2 miles total distance
- Checkpoint 1 at 9.5 miles: Ballynahown
- Checkpoint 2 at 19 miles: R336, Galway
- Checkpoint 3 at 28.2 miles: Furnace Road, Lettermuckoo
- Checkpoint 4 at 37.6 miles: Derryrush
- Checkpoint 5 at 47.1 miles: Lough Nacoogarrow
This is a cup-free event, meaning participants must carry their own reusable drinking vessels. Mandatory equipment includes a backpack, head torch with spare batteries, maps, compass or GPS device, whistle, mobile phone, emergency food, and a first aid kit. The organizers provide tracking devices for all competitors to monitor progress in real-time.
A minimum average speed of 4 mph is required to remain in the competition. Participants who fall below this pace at timed checkpoints will be withdrawn. The event has a total capacity of 40 runners. All finishers receive a bespoke race medal, and trophies are awarded to the male and female champions. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
