Event Overview

The MTC Leprechaun is a single-day ultramarathon covering a distance of 43 miles (69.2 km). It starts at the Eccles Hotel in Glengarriff and finishes at the Killarney Court Hotel in Killarney, Ireland. The route follows the MizMal route established by Wild Atlantic Cycling. This event is also designated as Day 2 of the larger, fourteen-day MTC MizMal End to End Challenge of Ireland.

Race Details

The route has a total ascent of 1,251.3 metres and a descent of 1,219.4 metres. It includes several checkpoints:

  • CP1: Releagh, Co. Kerry (8.5 miles)
  • CP2: 9-5 N71, Co. Kerry (16.5 miles total)
  • CP3: Derrynafunsha, Molls Gap, Co. Kerry (24 miles total)
  • CP4: Dunloe Upper, Gap of Dunloe, Co. Kerry (32.6 miles total)

A strict minimum average pace of 4 mph is enforced, with cut-off times at each checkpoint. Competitors falling below this pace may be withdrawn from the race. The event is cup-free, requiring participants to bring their own reusable cup.

Participation & Requirements

Entry is limited to 20 participants for the Leprechaun standalone event, with an additional 20 slots for those undertaking the full fourteen-day MizMal challenge, making a maximum field of 40 runners. All finishers receive a bespoke Leprechaun medal, with trophies awarded to the male and female champions. An optional entry upgrade includes an official race t-shirt and a hi-viz jacket.

Participants must carry mandatory equipment, including a backpack, head torch with spare batteries, provided maps, a compass or GPS device, a whistle, a mobile phone, and a basic first aid kit.
