Historic Road Race in Kerry
The Farranfore St. Stephen's Day Road Race is one of the longest-running athletics events in Ireland, having been held annually since 1961. The event takes place on a traditional route that has remained consistent for decades, starting and finishing at the Kerry Group Mill in Farranfore. The course follows the road toward Firies and returns via the same path. For the safety of participants, the entire road is closed to vehicular traffic for the duration of the event.
Participants can choose from two distinct distances:
- 5 km Timed Race: Open to individuals aged 13 years and older.
- 2 km Family Fun Run / Walk: A shorter option intended for families and participants of various ages.
The course features a specific profile, beginning with a 400-meter uphill climb from the start at the Kerry Group Mill. After reaching the crest, the path descends and remains level for approximately 1.6 km. Runners encounter another incline as they approach the turnaround point near Firies Village. The 2 km participants perform their turnaround at the 1 km marker, located just before the railway line crossing.
Event facilities include number collection at the Sports Hall in Farranfore and ample parking located at the Community Hall, which is situated 400 meters from the start line.
