MTC KELPIE - Ultra running
The MTC KELPIE is a single-day ultra marathon covering 38 miles. It forms Day 9 of the nine-day MTC SCOTIA end-to-end challenge and will be run alongside SCOTIA competitors. The course starts at Inver Caravan Park, Dunbeath and finishes at John O'Groats.
Check-points are located at:
- CP1, Lybster : 8 miles
- CP2, Wick : 16.9 miles
- CP3, Wick : 26.1 miles The total ascent is listed as 1,753 ft and total descent 1,929 ft.
The event enforces preset cut-offs based on a minimum average speed of 4.0 mph; competitors who fall below this requirement may be withdrawn. Entry is limited to 20 race-only places with an additional allowance of 20 places for SCOTIA participants, for a maximum of 40 competitors. All entrants must be 20 years or over on the start day.
Mandatory kit includes a backpack, head torch with spare batteries, provided route maps, compass or GPS device, whistle, mobile phone, basic first aid and emergency food. Competitors receive a tracking device with an SOS button and maps or GPX files are provided to entrants in advance. The race is cup-free; competitors should bring a reusable cup.
Entry fees are stated as £90 for the standard entry and £155 for a plus package that includes a race shirt and hi-viz jacket. All payments are non refundable; personal cancellation insurance is offered at checkout. Finishers receive a bespoke Kelpie medal and male and female champions receive trophies.
