MTC KELPIE
The MTC KELPIE is a 38 mile ultra running event and the final day (Day 9) of the MTC SCOTIA nine day end to end challenge. The route runs from Inver Caravan Park in Dunbeath to John O'Groats and records about 1,753 ft ascent and 1,929 ft descent. This is the first edition of the MTC KELPIE.
Entry is limited to 20 race-only places plus an additional allowance of 20 for SCOTIA competitors, giving a maximum of 40 starters. Entry fees are non refundable; standard entry is priced at £90 and a plus race package including an embroidered race shirt and lightweight hi‑viz jacket is offered at £155 when purchased at least four weeks before the event.
The event is cup free; competitors must bring a reusable cup. Organisers set preset cut off points along the route based on a minimum average speed of 4 mph; competitors who fall below that minimum may be withdrawn. All entrants must be 20 years or over on the start day.
Maps and GPX files are supplied to entrants only and are emailed about four weeks before the race. Competitors receive a tracking device with real time monitoring and an SOS function. Mandatory kit requirements include a backpack, head torch and spare batteries, the provided route maps, compass or GPS device, whistle, mobile phone, basic first aid and emergency food, and a waterproof map case. All finishers receive a KELPIE medal; male and female champions will receive bespoke trophies. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
