MTC KELPIE
The MTC KELPIE is a single-day ultra running event on 6 June 2027. The race distance is 38 miles and it forms Day 9 (final day) of the MTC SCOTIA nine-day end-to-end of Scotland. The route starts at Inver Caravan Park, Dunbeath, and finishes at John O'Groats. Total ascent is 1,753 ft and total descent is 1,929 ft. This is the first edition of the event. Competitor entries are limited to 20, with an additional allowance of 20 for SCOTIA entrants (maximum 40).
Race format, kit and rules
The organiser requires competitors to maintain a minimum average pace of 4.0 mph; preset cut-off points along the route reflect this and falling below the minimum can result in withdrawal. Entrants must be 20 years or over on the day of the race. The event is cup-free; competitors must bring their own reusable cup. Mapping and GPX files are provided to entrants by email about four weeks before the race. Each competitor receives a tracking device with real-time tracking and an SOS function.
Mandatory kit includes a backpack, head torch with spare batteries, provided route maps, compass or GPS device, whistle, mobile phone, basic first aid (including blister treatment), emergency food (two chocolate bars) and a waterproof map case. Check-point food may include malt loaf, sandwiches, sweets, squash, cola and water. Entry fees are listed as £90 for standard entry and £155 for the plus package (race shirt and hi-viz jacket). All payments are non-refundable under the organiser’s terms. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
