MTC KELPIE
The MTC KELPIE is a 38 mile ultra race and forms Day 9 of the Mount to Coast SCOTIA nine day end to end challenge. The single day route runs from Inver Caravan Park, Dunbeath, to John O'Groats. All finishers receive a bespoke KELPIE medal and male and female champions receive trophies. Competitors may upgrade their entry at checkout to include the official race shirt and a hi viz jacket.
Entries are limited to 20 race-only places with an additional allowance of 20 places for SCOTIA competitors, giving a maximum field of 40. This is the first edition of the event. Total ascent is listed as 1,753 ft and total descent as 1,929 ft. UTMB points are to be announced. Entry fees are published as £90 for standard entry and £155 for the race plus package; deposits and payments are non refundable.
The event has preset cut off controls based on a minimum average speed of 4.0 miles per hour; competitors who fall below this threshold may be withdrawn. Entrants must be 20 years or over on the day of the race. Organisers provide route maps and GPX files to entrants four weeks before the event and issue tracking devices with SOS capability for real time monitoring.
Mandatory kit includes a backpack, head torch with spare batteries, maps as provided, compass or GPS device, whistle, mobile phone, basic first aid and an emergency food pack. The race is cup free so competitors need to bring a reusable cup. Checkpoint food examples include malt loaf, sandwiches, sweets, squash, cola and water.
