About the race
The MTC KELPIE is a single-day ultra running event covering 38 miles from Inver Caravan Park, Dunbeath to John O'Groats. It serves as Day 9 of the MTC SCOTIA nine day end to end challenge and is the first edition scheduled for 2028.
The route includes three staffed checkpoints in Lybster and Wick at approximately 8, 16.9 and 26.1 miles, with a total ascent of about 1,753 ft and descent of about 1,929 ft. Competitor numbers are limited to 20 places plus an additional allowance of 20 for SCOTIA entrants, giving a maximum field of 40.
The event is cup free so entrants must provide a reusable cup. The organiser issues route maps and GPX files only to registered competitors, typically distributed four weeks before the event. Each competitor receives a tracking device with real time tracking and an SOS button.
There is a mandatory kit list which includes a backpack, head torch with spare batteries, route maps, compass or GPS device, whistle, mobile phone, basic first aid and emergency food. The organiser enforces cut off times based on a minimum average speed of 4.0 mph; competitors who fall below the required pace may receive warnings and can be withdrawn if they do not meet the minimum standards.
Entry options include a standard fee and a plus package that includes an embroidered race shirt and a hi viz jacket. All finishers receive a bespoke KELPIE medal and male and female champions receive trophies. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
