MTC KELPIE
The MTC KELPIE is a 38 mile ultra running event taking place on 4 June 2028. It forms Day 9 of the MTC SCOTIA nine day end to end challenge and is part of the Mount to Coast End to End Challenge Series. The route runs from Inver Caravan Park, Dunbeath, to John O'Groats.
Entry is limited to 20 competitors with an additional allowance of 20 places for SCOTIA entrants, giving a maximum field of 40. This is the first edition of the MTC KELPIE. All finishers receive a bespoke KELPIE medal and male and female champions receive trophies; trophy designs are currently being finalised.
The event uses preset cut off points based on a minimum average speed of 4.0 miles per hour. Competitors who fall below this minimum may be warned and can be withdrawn if the requirement is not met. Organisers provide competitor tracking devices with SOS functionality and real time tracking during the race.
Maps and GPX files are provided to entrants and emailed four weeks before the event. The race is cup free so competitors must bring a reusable cup. Competitors must carry mandatory kit including a backpack, head torch with spare batteries, route maps, compass or GPS device, whistle, mobile phone, basic first aid and emergency food. Example checkpoint food includes malt loaf, sandwiches, sweets, squash, cola and water.
Entry fees are stated as £90 for standard entry and £155 for a plus race package that includes a race shirt and lightweight hi viz jacket. All entries are non refundable although personal cancellation insurance and a defer option are available at booking. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
