Event details
The MTC Afanc takes place on 18th April 2026 and is part of the Mount to Coast End to End Challenge series. The race distance is approximately 39.7 miles and it also serves as Day 5 of the MTC CYMRUN six-day event. Competitor numbers are limited to 20 race-only places, with an additional allowance of 20 CYMRUN entrants (maximum 40). All finishers receive an Afanc medal; male and female champions receive trophies. Entry fee options listed are £90.00 for the race and £155.00 for a race package that includes a shirt and hi-viz jacket. All deposits and payments are non-refundable; personal cancellation insurance and a defer option (fee £15) are available at booking.
Route, logistics and rules
The full route follows National Cycle Route 8 from the River Wye Activity Centre, Glasbury, to Travelodge Merthyr Tydfil. Check-points are at Llanfilo (8.6 miles), Lock House (17.2 miles), and Merthyr Tydfil (28.1 miles). Organisers use preset cut-off times based on a minimum average speed of 4.0 mph; falling below this may result in withdrawal. Maps and GPX files and real-time tracking devices are provided to entrants; mapping information is emailed four weeks before the race. The event is cup-free; competitors must bring a reusable cup. Mandatory kit includes a backpack, head torch with spare batteries, route maps, compass or GPS, whistle, mobile phone, basic first aid, emergency food and a waterproof map case.
