The Mount to Coast Afanc (MTC Afanc)

The MTC Afanc is an ultra race scheduled for 18 April 2026. The event is part of the Mount to Coast End to End Challenge and is listed as Day 5 of the MTC CYMRUN multi-day series. The course distance is given as approximately 39.7 miles. All finishers receive an Afanc medal; male and female champions receive bespoke trophies. Entry options include a standard entry and a plus package that includes a race shirt and a hi-viz jacket. Competitor numbers are limited to 20 plus an additional 20 places for CYMRUN entrants, for a maximum of 40 runners. Entry fees are listed at £90 and £155 for the race package.

Route, safety and logistics

The route follows National Cycle Route 8 for the full distance, starting at the River Wye Activity Centre, Glasbury, and finishing at Travelodge Merthyr Tydfil. Check-points are sited along the route (example mileages given at about 8.6, 17.2, 28.1 and finish at 39.7 miles). Organisers set cut-offs based on a minimum average speed of 4.0 mph; competitors who fall below this requirement may be withdrawn. The race is cup-free so competitors must bring a reusable cup. Entrants receive maps and GPX files by email before the event and are provided with a tracking device that includes an SOS function. A mandatory kit list includes a backpack, head torch with spare batteries, route maps, compass or GPS, whistle, mobile phone, basic first aid and emergency food.
