Mountain Marmot Trail Run
The Mountain Marmot Trail Run is a mountain race held at Purgatory Resort in Durango, Colorado. The course follows a straightforward path starting at the base of the mountain, ascending to the top of lift 8, and returning to the start.
The event features a single distance:
- 12.2 miles (approximately 19.6 km)
The route utilizes single-track trails through the San Juan Mountains. Due to the significant elevation gain, the distance is described as equivalent in effort to a half-marathon. The second half of the race consists entirely of downhill running. The course remains open for 3.5 hours, requiring participants to maintain a minimum pace of 17 minutes per mile.
Four aid stations are located along the course at roughly miles 2.8, 4.5, 7.0 (the summit), and 10.0. These stations provide water, snacks, and first aid. Participants are encouraged to carry their own water for hydration between stations.
Registration includes a race shirt and a finisher's prize for those who sign up by the early August deadline. The event has a registration cap and often sells out. Age restrictions apply: participants must be at least 12 years old, and those aged 12-15 must register and run alongside an adult. Top finishers in each age group receive a specific award.
