Event overview

The Mountain Fork Half Marathon is the seventh running of a 13.6-mile loop race in Norton, Virginia. The course starts and finishes at the High Knob Observation Tower on the Jefferson National Forest's Clinch Ranger District. High Knob's elevation at the start area is about 4,200 feet. Race proceeds benefit trail development and maintenance on the Flag Rock Recreation Area trails and on High Knob.

Course and logistics

The route loops through the Mountain Fork watershed, primarily on Forest Service roads and paved forest roads, and returns to the High Knob parking area. Total elevation gain is approximately 1,600 feet. The course is open to traffic; vehicles may be present and some sections include sharp or blind curves. Aid stations are located at about mile markers 2.3, 5.0, 7.8, and 11.5. Portable toilets will be available at the start/finish area. Runners are hand timed and must display bibs at the finish. A time limit is enforced for completing the course.

Registration, awards and rules

Registration fees vary by date. Runners who register by September 4, 2026 are guaranteed a race shirt. Awards are given to the top three men and women overall, masters winners (age 40 and up), and age group top three finishers in these categories: 29 and under; 30-39; 40-49; 50-59; 60 and over. All finishers receive medals. Strollers are not permitted on the course. Participants using headphones are not allowed on the course.
