Monterey Bay Mapathon and Half
The Monterey Bay Mapathon is a navigation adventure taking place in Pacific Grove, California. Participants explore historical highlights and coastal views of the Monterey Peninsula by visiting various checkpoints marked on a custom map. The event utilizes a 1:15000 scale map and requires participants to answer multiple choice questions at each location to confirm they have reached the correct destination.
The event offers two primary distances:
- 26.2 miles (Full Mapathon)
- 13.1 miles (Half Mapathon)
Participants can compete as individuals or in teams of up to five people. The course features divisions for foot travel, as well as a foot and bike combined division for the full distance. In the biking categories, results are recorded separately for standard bicycles and e-bikes with electric motor assist. Participants in the bike division are advised to bring locking devices, as some checkpoints may not be directly accessible by riding.
The full course includes approximately two dozen checkpoints, while the half course involves about a dozen. One aid station is available along the route. Registration is open to seniors, adults, students, and juniors, with specific categories for women, men, mixed teams, and families. Following the event, participants have access to refreshments and socializing at the Jewell Park Picnic Area.
The course remains open for several hours, and the event takes place in various weather conditions. Recommended gear includes closed-toed shoes, sunblock, and hats. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
