Monterey Bay Mapathon & Half
The Monterey Bay Mapathon & Half is a map navigation event on the Monterey Peninsula that offers two course lengths: a full course of 26.2 miles and a half course of 13.1 miles.
- 26.2 miles (full marathon distance)
- 13.1 miles (half marathon distance)
Teams of one to five navigate using a custom 1:15000 scale map that shows checkpoints as circles. Participants must reach the center of each checkpoint and answer a simple multiple choice question before moving on. The full course includes about two dozen checkpoints and the half course includes about a dozen; there is one aid station along the routes.
Format and divisions include foot and bike and foot (bike and foot format applies to the marathon only). Gender divisions are Women, Men, and Mixed. Age divisions include Junior, Open, Masters, and Family. E-bikes are permitted in the bike division and results are reported separately for regular bikes and for motor assisted bikes.
The event meets at Jewell Park Picnic Area in Pacific Grove, California. It runs rain or shine; closed toed shoes, hats, and sunblock are recommended. Foot and bike teams may want a locking device because not all checkpoints are bike accessible. After returning to the finish there are refreshments and social opportunities. Registration is available online, by season pass, or on the day of the event. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
