MLK Day Drum Run - Birmingham
The MLK Day Drum Run is an annual road race event in Birmingham, Alabama, presented by The Leftover Energy Foundation Inc. The event is scheduled for January 16, 2027, with the start and finish area located at History Park in the Fourth Avenue Historic District, 1700 4th Ave North, Birmingham, AL 35203.
The event offers multiple course options:
- 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk
- 5K chip timed, USATF certified
- 10K chip timed, USATF certified
Since 2017 the event has included drumlines from metro-area schools and groups; past editions have featured over 200 drummers positioned along the course. Participating drumlines receive donations to their booster associations through the nonprofit organizer. The race route passes through parts of Birmingham including the Civil Rights District, 4th Avenue Historic Business District, The Switch, the Park District, the Rotary Trail, Birmingham Green, the Automotive Historic District, Jones Valley Trail, and Avondale.
The 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk is open to all ages and is not chip timed; it is described as a level course with staff on course. The 5K and 10K are chip timed by a professional timing company. A portion of team registrations is returned to approved beneficiary organizations: $5 of each team member registration is allocated to the chosen team or beneficiary via the Leftover Energy Foundation Inc.
Packet pickup is available before race day at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. The event includes pre- and post-race activities, sponsor booths, and a drumline exhibition. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
