MLK Day 5K Drum Run - Birmingham
The MLK Day 5K Drum Run is presented by The Leftover Energy Foundation Inc. and is scheduled for January 16, 2027 at History Park, 1700 4th Ave North, in the Fourth Avenue Historic District of Birmingham, Alabama. The event includes multiple distances and a course that travels through parts of the city undergoing revitalization.
Distances
- 1 Mile fun run/walk, open to all ages
- 5K (3.1 miles)
- 10K (6.2 miles)
The event features drumlines from metro area schools and organizations positioned along the race course. Since 2017 the drumline presence has grown to more than 200 drummers. Each participating drumline receives a donation to its booster association through the nonprofit organizer. The event also supports approved beneficiary teams and awards scholarships to participating drumline seniors; $5 of each team member registration is returned to the chosen team via the foundation.
The 5K and 10K are chip timed and USATF certified (5K certificate AL24029JE, 10K certificate AL24030JE). The 1 Mile is not timed and is described as a level course for younger participants; course staff and parental accompaniment are noted. Pre- and post-event activities include music, warm up, sponsor booths, a drumline exhibition, and participant race shirts and goodie bags. Packet pick up is scheduled at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute on January 15, 2027. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
