MLK Day 5K Drum Run - Birmingham
The MLK Day 5K Drum Run in Birmingham, Alabama is an annual community road race presented by The Leftover Energy Foundation Inc. The 11th edition is scheduled for January 16, 2027 and will start and finish at History Park in the Fourth Avenue Historic District, 1700 4th Avenue North, Birmingham, AL 35203.
The event offers multiple distances:
- 1 Mile
- 5K
- 10K
The 5K and 10K races are chip timed and the courses are USATF certified. The 1 Mile Fun Run is open to all ages and is not timed. Drumlines from metro area schools and organizations line the race course and perform along the route; participating drumlines receive donations to their booster associations through the event nonprofit. The race supports approved beneficiary teams and scholarships for participating drumline graduating seniors. For teams registered as approved beneficiaries, five dollars of each team member registration is returned to that team for community use via the nonprofit.
The race route passes through parts of central Birmingham including the Civil Rights District, the 4th Avenue Historic Business District, The Switch, the Park District, the Rotary Trail, Birmingham Green, the Automotive Historic District, the Jones Valley Trail and Avondale.
