About the race
The Millinocket Marathon & Half is a volunteer organized, donation based road race held in Millinocket, Maine. The event offers two distances:
- Marathon (two loops of the course)
- Half marathon (one loop of the course)
Both courses are USATF certified (Marathon ME16007JK; Half ME16008JK) and use a 13.1 mile loop that is repeated for the marathon. The course leaves town, includes a paved climb on Poplar Road, about six miles on the Golden Road (a gravel, privately owned logging road run under permit), and returns on pavement via Millinocket Lake Road into town. Runners must keep to the left side of the road facing oncoming traffic.
Timing is chip based with timing chips affixed to the back of bibs; bibs must be worn on the front and kept flat. The race enforces course time limits and published average paces for each distance; there is no official sag wagon and no early start. Water stops are not guaranteed; past editions have included runner organized pop up support.
Although there is no formal entry fee, donations are strongly encouraged to cover essential race expenses such as timing, course certification, port a johns, bus transportation, and insurance. The race is organized entirely by unpaid volunteers and excess donations support local community groups.
The event runs on unceded territory of the Wabanaki Confederacy and includes a land acknowledgement recognizing Penobscot, Passamaquoddy, Maliseet, and Micmac peoples. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
