Millinocket Marathon & Half - Race overview
The Millinocket Marathon & Half is a grassroots road running event held in Millinocket, Maine each December. First staged in 2015 as a self-timed community event, it was created to support the local mill town following the closing of its major employer. The event is organized entirely by unpaid volunteers and operates with no formal entry fee; participants are strongly encouraged to make an optional donation to cover essential race expenses.
Both the marathon and half-marathon courses have been measured and certified to USATF standards and may be used to qualify for major marathons, including Boston and New York. Donations support race timing, course certification, portable toilets, bus transportation, insurance, and other basic race costs. Funds raised above those costs are donated to local charitable groups and organizations. The Maine Sports Commission estimates the event contributes approximately $2.5M to $3M annually to the local economy.
Logistics include a downtown start/finish area on Penobscot Avenue with Veterans Memorial Park listed as a start location and both races finishing at 33 Penobscot Avenue. There is no parking near the start/finish; free bus transportation is provided between lodging and staging areas. Registration policies include entrant capacities and a cancellation deadline in early November. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
