Midsummer Mortimer Trail 2026
The Midsummer Mortimer Trail is a back-to-basics, self-navigating running event through the Marches of England landscape. Participants follow the Mortimer Trail, a route that traverses the border region between Herefordshire and Shropshire. The courses consist of mixed terrain, including trails, fields, and roads, passing through extensive forests, limestone tops, and pastures. Participants will navigate a succession of hills and ridges with several climbs, crossing the valleys of the rivers Arrow, Lugg, and Teme.
The event offers two distinct distances:
- 30 mile Ultra: This route starts in Kington and concludes at Ludlow Castle. It passes through various villages and landmarks such as Wapley hill fort, Croft Ambrey, Orleton Common, the High Vinnals, and Mary Knoll Valley.
- 15 mile Route: Also referred to as the Croft Half, this distance begins in Aymestrey at the Riverside Inn and follows the latter half of the trail to finish at Ludlow Castle.
Both routes finish in the entrance of the medieval ruins of Ludlow Castle, located in the market town of Ludlow. The event is open to participants aged 18 to 98. Organizers provide optional transport from the parking area at Ludlow Rugby Club to the respective start points in Kington and Aymestrey for an additional fee. This event requires runners and walkers to be self-sufficient in their navigation across the landscape. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
