Merino Muster
The Merino Muster is New Zealand's longest-running cross-country ski marathon, first held in 1995. The race is staged at Snow Farm, a dedicated cross-country ski area situated at about 1,500 metres above the Cardrona Valley.
The event is part of the Worldloppet series and has associations with Ski Classics. Course design uses a combination of former farm and sheep-mustering routes and purpose-built trails that follow the natural topography and snow-retention features of the terrain. The event links local high-country farming history with long-distance cross-country skiing.
Race formats listed include:
- 42 km Merino Muster
- 21 km Snow Rake
- 5 km Snow Farmer
- Mini Merino for younger participants
The event offers accommodation and transport options with specific Wanaka hotel packages and visitor packages. Race information and results are published, and the event includes volunteer opportunities and a photo gallery. The Merino Muster also notes a traditional timing window one week after the Kangaroo Hoppet, typically in the fifth week of August or the first week of September.
The 2027 event is scheduled for Saturday 28 August 2027 and will coincide with the 50 year anniversary of Worldloppet. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
