Mentoring Matters 5K
The Mentoring Matters 5K is a fundraising run and walk presented by the Follow My Steps nonprofit to raise awareness of mentorship needs in under-resourced communities. The event is the fifth annual edition and takes place at Forest Park in Springfield, Massachusetts, with registration located at the Monkey House. Parking is available in the Cyr Arena parking lot.
Participants may register as individuals or as teams, and teams may fundraise. A tee shirt is included with registration while supplies last. A youth discount is applied at checkout. Two participation formats are available: an on-site 5K at Forest Park and a virtual 5K option that can be completed at any time until August 8. Virtual participants may choose their preferred activity and are encouraged to track distance or time using a smartphone or smartwatch. The virtual registration fee is described as a donation to support youth resources including school supplies, college financial aid, and skill development workshops.
Follow My Steps describes its programming as focused on youth mentoring, career and skill development, and financial resources. The organization lists several outcomes associated with mentoring, including higher college enrollment and increased volunteerism among mentees.
