Memorial Day Flag Relay - Mobile, AL
This event is a volunteer-led flag relay across Mobile, Alabama held on Monday, May 25, 2026. The relay covers a total distance of 22 Miles and starts at 9055 Tanner Williams Rd in west Mobile, next to Pierce Creek Cemetery. The event honors military service members and their families who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
Volunteers run or jog in pairs of at least two, carrying two flags (a United States flag and a "We Support Our Troops" flag, both 3 x 5 in size) on a lightweight aluminum pole. Legs are typically one mile in length but may be longer by participant preference. Flags are passed at designated points until the full segment is complete. The average pace for legs is about one mile per 10 to 12 minutes, with variation depending on participants.
A personally owned safety vehicle follows the runners at a safe distance to provide a buffer from other traffic and to carry the MDFR volunteer segment coordinator, who issues periodic progress updates by text and Facebook. Local police or sheriff escorts also assist with traffic safety along the route. Registration is handled through RunSignup, opens on April 14, 2026, and closes on May 24, 2026. No funds are solicited or accepted for the event. Sponsors and hosts include Cross the Divide, the South Alabama Chapter/Military Officers Association of America, the South Alabama Veterans Council, and Veterans Recovery Resources.
