Maurice Mullins Ultra
The Maurice Mullins Ultra is a long-distance mountain running event held in County Wicklow. The course covers a distance of 50.5 km with a total ascent of 1900 m. Due to the distance and elevation, the event is classified as extreme difficulty. This race serves as the trial for the 52 km trail race in the European Athletics Off-road running Championships.
The route starts at the Pier Gates Car Park and follows the Wicklow Way. Runners are diverted through Ballinastoe before returning to the main trail. The course continues along the boardwalks toward Crone Woods and reaches a turnaround point at Glencullen Bridge on Boranaraltry Lane after 27 km. The return leg follows the same path back to Pier Gates, though it does not repeat the Ballinastoe section.
Participants must carry advanced mandatory kit, including:
- Waterproof jacket with hood and taped seams
- Hat or buff and gloves
- Whistle and foil blanket or bivvy bag
- Waterproof full leg cover
- Minimum 500 mL water capacity
- Emergency food and a mobile phone
- Map and compass
Strict cut-off times are enforced at Crone Woods and the Glencullen Bridge turnaround. The event is self-sufficient, and runners are requested to avoid having crews or spectators at the turnaround point due to limited parking.
