Manila Madness 5K Freedom Run/Ruck
The Manila Madness 5K Freedom Run/Ruck is a sports event held in Raritan, New Jersey. The event honors the legacy of Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone and recognizes the sacrifices of military personnel. Participants can choose between running and rucking categories, with all in-person activities taking place on a course centered around Canal Street.
The event offers three distinct participation options:
- Basilone 5K Freedom Run
- Basilone 5K Freedom Ruck
- Basilone 5K Freedom Run (Virtual)
The run is held on a USATF-certified course and is recognized as a USATF NJ 500 Point Event. The ruck category is inspired by historical military challenges. Specifically, it reflects the weight carried by Gunnery Sergeant Basilone, whose Browning M1917 machine gun weighed approximately 40 pounds when water-cooled. Participants looking for a higher level of difficulty can opt for a full combat load simulation, which includes a machine gun with water, tripod, and ammunition, totaling about 100 pounds.
Registered participants receive a T-shirt and a medal upon completion. For those unable to attend the physical location in Raritan, a virtual registration option allows for remote participation. The event also maintains a partnership with the USATF New Jersey association. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
