Course and setting

The course crosses the Wet Mountains and moves from one side of the range to the other, exposing distinct ecosystems. The east side is wetter and features firs, spruces, lodgepole pines with moss, and alpine meadows with aspen stands and wildflowers. As the route descends to the west, vegetation becomes more arid with pinon pines, junipers, ponderosa pines, yucca, cactus and sagebrush. Runners can see the Spanish Peaks to the south and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains to the west. The area includes historic terrain known as the outlaw hideout Mace’s Hole; local tradition and newspaper accounts keep the story of that hideout alive. Night skies in the area are noted in the event description. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
