Event overview

- 3.1+ Miles
- 6.2+ Miles
- 13.1 Miles
- 26.2+ Miles

- 116 Miles
Each race is point-to-point and finishes in Medora. The 100-mile option has a 36-hour cutoff. Finish-line awards and age-group awards are presented; 5k, 10k, half and marathon finishers receive custom finisher medals while ultra finishers receive custom belt buckles.
Course and logistics
The course follows the Maah Daah Hey Trail through the North Dakota Badlands. Trail surfaces include dirt, clay, sandstone and scoria, with prairie grass on some butte tops and minimal tree cover. Elevation gain increases with distance, up to about 11,968 feet for the longest distance.
Aid stations are placed roughly every 25 miles and provide tents, chairs, porta potties and water. There are about nine road-intersection checkpoints where volunteers assist and porta potties are available; these are less frequent on the northern half of the course and more frequent on the southern half. Support-and-gear (SAG) drivers are recommended. For longer distances, participants must arrange their own transportation to starting locations and pickup off course and must have a means to communicate with their transport. Pacers are allowed for the ultras under specific rules: pacers must be 18+, register and wear a pacer bib, join and leave at designated checkpoints, carry their own gear, and stay with the registered runner.
